Danielle Johnson couldn’t get an invite to their party so she decided to throw her own. Johnson has been in the radio business since 2009 and has seen firsthand the need for more Black ownership. Big media dominates the radio business, a fact that hinders a lot of Black voices from being heard. Johnson, in fact, applied several times for a job with iHeartMedia, one of the largest mass media platforms in the world. After several denials, she decided to launch her own. Spark FM (@sparkfmonline) will launch in April as the first all-digital radio station in Boston owned by a Black woman. Johnson is committed to providing a platform for Black artists to be heard. She’s also aware that Black businesses need avenues to reach their customers, “a place where they can advertise their business to the local community and kind of circulate the Black dollar back into the community in which it would be needed,” as she told The Daily Free Press. Johnson hopes the new station will also serve as a platform to encourage wealth building in the Black community. She’d like listeners to learn how to build generational wealth, improve their credit scores and purchase real estate. There are an abundance of radio stations targeting Black audiences but few trying to empower them. Black ownership makes a real difference. Black radio is still very important. There are a number of issues that impact Black communities and Black owned stations are critical in helping to properly inform them. Further, Black radio offers an opportunity for the community to more easily organize resources and highlight businesses within the community, in order to offer support. Ownership matters and when it comes to the airwaves, it means the difference between an informed and uninformed populace. It’s not just about spotlighting the next hot rapper — Black radio is a means to liberation, when properly executed. Katerina Sakellaropoulou, a top judge, was elected the first woman president of Greece in a rare display of unity by lawmakers, Reuters reported. Sakellaropoulou had been president of Greece's top administrative court, the Council of State, and was also the first woman to hold that position. Sakellaropoulou was nominated by the ruling conservative New Democracy party, but was also supported by the main opposition party, Syriza, and the center-left party Movement for Change, CNN reported, noting that Sakellaropoulou herself is not a member of a political party. Representation is everything. A former Philadelphia principal is setting out to diversify the education sector by increasing the number of Black teachers in classrooms. According to Black News, nonprofit leader Sharif El-Mekki received a $300,000 grant that will go towards recruiting educators of color. - El-Mekki has been a fierce advocate for equity and justice within the education system. He served as the principal of the Philadelphia-based Mastery Charter School. He also founded a nonprofit organization called The Center for Black Educator Development which aims to empower Black students through culturally competent education. The organization focuses on the development of teachers who utilize education as an avenue to fight for social justice by providing them with workshops and resources. The Center for Black Educator Development also runs a summer program for grade school children dubbed the Freedom School where youngsters learn about the arts, literature and Black history. - The grant was donated to the organization by NBA player #TobiasHarris . The Mall of America made history once again by hiring its first-ever Black Santa. Larry Jefferson is the man who was tasked with doing the honor of greeting several children whose parents took them to the mall to see Santa. The mall, located in Bloomington, MN, booked Jefferson for a solid nine-day appearance for the season. During his tenure, the jolly Santa reflected on his experiences in the role. “It gives kids from Minnesota a Santa who looks like them, but, frankly, kids love Santa no matter what color you are,” Jefferson told NBC News. “I just want to share the Christmas spirit and spread the love during this holiday season.” Jefferson, who is known to his fans as “Santa Larry,” said he garners positive responses from children and parents alike, regardless of their racial and ethnic background. “My lines are filled with kids — and filled of diversity,” said Jefferson.“Black kids, white kids, Asian kids, Hispanic kids — they all come to see Santa.” But some folks just can’t get with a Black Santa. The Minneapolis Star Tribune had to turn off the comment section of their article on Jefferson due to so many racist remarks. “These people were online bullies with their hateful, racist comments,” Jefferson said. “I ignore them because we’re hearing so many positive observations.” This year, there weren’t many racist reactions on social media like before and there has been an outpouring of support. “One woman came up to me in tears,” Jefferson said. “She said she always wanted to see a black Santa but had never seen a black Santa until she saw me. This is what we call living history. Mrs. Leila Williams, owner of Atlanta’s historic “Leila’s Dinette,” turned 107 years old this week. - Williams and her late husband Charlie opened “Leila’s Dinette" in the late 1940s. For over 40 years, people from all over flocked to Southwest Atlanta to taste her good food but more importantly, to be in good community. - The dinette was also a place where civil rights leaders came to “strategize and spend quality time,” Charlotte Webb, Mrs. Williams goddaughter, told NBC News. - Over the years, Williams and her husband hosted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Julian Bond, Congressman John Lewis, and a host of other movement leaders. - Mrs. Williams’ place was also the spot college students from nearby Spelman and Morehouse would come to eat. Atlanta business executive Julius Hollis remembers the place fondly. “Leila's Dinette was the anchor in the Black community and as a young boy growing up in that area, on many occasions I would go in and there I would see Dr. Benjamin Mays, and I would see John Lewis. I would see a great cross-section of political and business leaders throughout Black Atlanta,” Hollis told NBC. - The dinette became a safe haven for Black people all around Atlanta. The diner closed in the early 1990s, staying vacant over a decade before being bought and renovated by Keitra Bates. It has now been transformed into a shared kitchen called Marddy’s, where chefs of color can come to make their food to sell to their customers. - “We were stepping into some very big shoes. That we were stepping into a place that just is hallowed ground for Black independence in Atlanta, because it was opened in 1949 and there were not many places we could go and be served with dignity. Ms. Leila created a space where that could happen and so I feel we are continuing that legacy with Marddy's,” Bates said. - While the dinette was known for its amazing food, people remember Williams most for caring nature and generosity. “She fed people even if they didn’t have money. She just had this kind spirit about her, and people remember her. To her, everybody was equal — visit #Becauseofthemwecan for more!

Some more behind the scenes moments of The Duke and 200 children planting trees in Chobe National Park! • The Duke of Sussex has kicked off the next leg of #RoyalTourAfrica by planting trees in Chobe National Park with children from local primary schools. The Duke planted a baobab, which are severely under threat across Africa, which will live for 1000 years! Each child grew their sapling from seed in recycled milk tins from the elephant orphanage, using fertilised soil from the orphans’ dung! The park is home to a huge elephant population – more than 17,000 – along with some of the world’s most diverse and vibrant eco-systems. The people, wildlife and whole area rely on the Chobe River to survive, but many species and indigenous trees are sadly now extinct. There is critical need to secure the forest so wildlife have access to the river. It took 15 months to finalize, but the Sounders woke up Tuesday morning with one of the world’s most diverse soccer ownership groups. The Sounders announced 11 families have become owners, forming the Seattle Futbol Club LLC that partially bought out Hollywood producer Joe Roth’s stake in the team. The latter was a founding father in 2009 with Adrian Hanauer, Paul Allen and Drew Carey, operating primarily from California. Once Roth announced he was stepping aside, Hanauer increased his majority stake in the club while Carey bumped up his investment with Jody Allen and the new owners entered at various levels as minority owners to round out the group. Recognizable names such as Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and his wife, Grammy Award-winning singer and actor Ciara, join hip-hop star Macklemore and his wife, Tricia Davis, as new investors. While Tuesday marked Day 1, the new faces won’t be formally introduced until a function slated for Aug. 19. “This was not a financial investment,” said Hanauer at news conference at the team’s Pioneer Square office. “This was about community, team, culture, diversity, inclusiveness and, yeah, winning.
